Rainey, Kizer, Reviere & Bell, PLC, Attorneys Brad Box and Jonathan Stewart Complete Boston Marathon

Rainey, Kizer, Reviere & Bell, P.L.C., attorneys excel both inside the courtroom and out.  Join us in extending congratulations to Tort and Insurance Group Practice members Brad Box and Jonathan Stewart for completing the 113th Annual Boston Marathon on April 20, 2009.  Brad finished in 3:36:07 and Jonathan finished in 3:36:08.

Over the course of two years, Brad Box, one of the firm’s partners has developed a love for running.  When asked how he got into the sport, he said, “After practicing law for over a decade, I felt like I was out of shape.”  In 2006, with a goal of becoming more fit, he joined a local gym.  At the time he was running one day per week for his cardiovascular exercise.  Jonathan Stewart, another attorney with Rainey Kizer, has been an avid runner since childhood.  Jonathan encouraged Brad to enter a 5K (3.1 miles).  Once Brad ran his first 5K, he was hooked.  After each small race, he found himself wanting to run others and do better.  Over time, the goal of running a marathon evolved.

For Brad, Boston was a new dream.  For Jonathan, it was a childhood dream. With Boston their goal, they began training.  Both Brad and Jonathan ran several half marathons and full marathons preparing for Boston’s qualifying time.  Brad qualified in the Chicago Marathon, and Jonathan qualified in the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon.  With Boston in arms reach, Brad and Jonathan prepared physically and mentally for the race.  They followed a detailed sixteen week elite runners training program and found it useful to keep a journal and meditate on thoughts and encouraging quotes.  A client of Brad’s once told him, “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.”  Brad emphasized the importance of not missing a workout while training.

The two runners compared the 26.2 mile Boston Marathon to “The Super Bowl” and the “be-all and end-all.”  It is the world's oldest annual marathon and also one of the most prestigious. The race, managed by the Boston Athletic Association, is one of the most popular sporting events in Boston, where it is held every year on the third Monday in April.  To qualify to run the Boston Marathon, you must run a qualifying time at a certified marathon. The strict qualifying rules have made the Boston event the most sought after of all marathon goals.  The strict rules also mean that the field of runners in Boston each year includes only the best runners in the world.

Brad and Jonathan said a big part of the race was being able to participate with so many amazing people.  Some were in full military dress and others participated with various handicaps.  Brad and Jonathan ran the last mile very slowly taking it all in.  At this point in the race, they felt a sense of accomplishment and joy just to be a part of it all.  Jonathan actually carried his little girl, Carlee Hayse, the last part of the race.  Brad stated, “You can feel the spirit of that place.  What a part of history in a historic town!”

When asked what running goals they have for the future, Brad said that his most recent goal had been to run another marathon this fall; however, he has decided to postpone that decision and plans to stay in shape and run Boston next year.  Brad has even considered participating in a triathlon, which is a multi-sport endurance event consisting of swimming, cycling, and running in immediate succession over various distances.

Jonathan plans to take a break from running to spend time with his growing family.  Jonathan and his wife, Shannon, have a beautiful little girl, Carlee Hayse, and they are expecting twin girls this fall.
