The annual selections are made using a patented multiphase process that includes a statewide survey of lawyers, an independent research evaluation of candidates and peer reviews by practice area. The result is a credible, comprehensive and diverse listing of exceptional attorneys. Rising Stars are attorneys who have been recognized by their peers as the best among those in practice of those practicing for less than 10 years or who are forty years old or younger.

Super Lawyer recognition is limited to five percent of the attorneys in a state, and Rising Star recognition is limited to 2.5 percent of the attorneys in a state.
